Meet Poppy
Breed: American Staffy Cross Rescue Breed
Barking from: Christchurch
What's up dog?
You've asked the impact Poppy had on me this year
I will try and tell you apologies for the occasional tear
Poppy is always waiting and happy to greet me
I come home from work and it's her I can't wait to see
I may have had a difficult day at my job.
She'll let me have cuddles and a little sob
The soft touch of her fur, the sneaky lick she does give.
I know deep down Poppy hasn't got long to live
Poppy is now 12 and a half years old
In her last 2 years I have been told
That was over a year ago
How much longer I don't know
She has arthritis in knees and spine
Her heart is sick it's only a matter of time
Every time I touch her soft red fur
I feel lucky to still have her
When she is dreaming and asleep
I'll lay down close and have a peek
She is getting to old for a long walk
But she will sit and listen to me talk
Poppy has alot of my friends who care
They send love and support when she's ill on posts I share
They love knowing she's not sick and ok
If I had taken her to the vet that day
Every day is simply a big impact for me
My undying love for Miss Poppy
One day they'll be none of her food in my fridge
Because she would have chosen to chase rainbows over the bridge
2025 NZ People's Choice Award
We believe no dog should be left behind.
Every dog entered into the competition is automatically in the running for the 2025 People’s Choice Award — and the winner will be decided by you, the public.
This year, we’re giving the aroha back to our communities.
Each year, our campaign is supported by a number of incredible charities across Aotearoa that work tirelessly to improve the lives of dogs and people alike. In 2025, we’re shining a spotlight on these organisations and the vital mahi they do.
As part of the voting process, every voter will have the chance to donate to our amazing mental health or dog-focused charities.
